President’s Message
As President of the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB),it is my privilege to welcome you to our community of regulators, practitioners, students, educators, and the public. AMFTRB’s mission remains steadfast: to support member licensing boards in their responsibility to protect the public, strengthen communication across jurisdictions, and serve as a central source of regulatory information. A critical component of this work is the Marriage and Family Therapy National Examination, which provides a standardized measure of competence that supports boards in making licensure decisions and maintaining public safety.
This website serves as a central hub for national regulatory work and collaboration. It provides information on the MFT National Examination, the committee and research initiatives, regulatory tools, and the annual meeting of member licensing boards. These resources are intended to promote consistency in licensure standards, support informed regulatory decision-making, and advance best practices in professional regulation.
AMFTRB continues to address emerging areas that impact regulatory oversight, including licensure portability, teletherapy, and the increasing use of technology and artificial intelligence in practice. We are committed to supporting member licensing boards in evaluating licensure standards in ways that protect the public while avoiding unnecessary barriers that limit the availability of qualified LMFTs to serve their communities. By anticipating changes in technology and practice, AMFTRB strives to help boards adapt while upholding rigorous standards that protect the public.
Noah Shields, LMFT-S, LPC-S, RPT ™
President, AMFTRB
